Stage 4 | Phase 1 – The Southernmost Amazon of South America

Bolivia • South America • 16 min • 2017

Synopsis

The fourth stage was divided into two phases within the territory of Bolivia.

The first documentary travels through the surroundings of Amboró National Park, at the southern edge of the Amazon of South America. The site lies at roughly the same average latitude as Brasília and is known as the elbow of the Andes mountain range.

The film also covers Potosí, home to Cerro Rico, where the Spanish obtained most of the silver extracted from the continent during the colonial period. Synchronously, the city sits at roughly the same average latitude as the stretch between Ouro Preto and Diamantina, the setting of gold mining in Portuguese colonial Brazil and where the Brumadinho and Mariana tragedies recently occurred.

In addition, the traveller explores places where the southernmost Amazonian springs of the continent flow: Sucre, Cochabamba, Villa Tunari and Buena Vista. At some points, the difference in altitude on the path from the Andes to the Amazon reaches 3,500 metres in just a few kilometres travelled.
